1. Project Overview

Project Date: October 2017

Project: Tangshan Yangguanlin Oil Depot Lighting & Security Project

Application: Lighting and security camera illumination for oil storage tank areas

Deployment: 3 × 20m Hydraulic-Lowering High Mast Lighting Poles

Delivery Period: 12 Days

This project involved the installation of high mast lighting systems for an oil depot tank farm, supporting nighttime inspections, operational activities, and security camera illumination.

The storage tanks were arranged in close proximity, creating potential lighting obstructions. As the site involved a potentially explosive atmosphere, the project also required appropriate luminaire selection, electrical protection, and practical maintenance arrangements.

To address these requirements, three 20m hydraulic-lowering high mast lighting poles were supplied, featuring explosion-protected luminaires and a lowering luminaire assembly.

The lighting assembly can be lowered to ground level for maintenance, reducing reliance on elevated access equipment.

2. Key Project Challenges & Engineering Solutions

Challenge 1 | Lighting Equipment for a Hazardous Oil Depot Environment

Oil storage tank areas may contain flammable and explosive substances. Lighting equipment and associated electrical systems must therefore be selected according to the site's hazardous-area requirements.

The high mast system also involves multiple components, including luminaires, the lighting assembly, electrical controls, and cable connections. These elements need to work together as an integrated installation.

Engineering Response

To address the lighting and electrical requirements:

Explosion-protected luminaires were specified for the lighting assembly in accordance with the project's equipment selection requirements.

Electrical controls and cable connections were designed to suit the lighting assembly and its installation interfaces.

Lightning protection and grounding provisions were incorporated into the electrical arrangement to reduce the risk of lightning-related damage.

The luminaires, electrical controls, and lowering mechanism were coordinated as part of the overall high mast configuration.

Challenge 2 | Lighting Coverage Around Closely Spaced Storage Tanks

The storage tanks and surrounding structures can obstruct light distribution, making it difficult to achieve effective coverage throughout the tank farm.

Simply increasing the number of luminaires does not necessarily eliminate shadowed areas. Pole positioning, mounting height, and luminaire aiming direction must also be considered.

The lighting system was required to support both nighttime inspection activities and supplementary illumination for security cameras.

Engineering Response

To address the site layout and combined lighting requirements:

High mast positions were determined with reference to the tank farm layout and priority inspection areas.

Luminaire arrangement and aiming directions were considered in relation to the 20m mounting height and lighting assembly configuration.

The lighting arrangement was planned to support both operational illumination and security camera visibility.

Multiple luminaires were mounted on an elevated lighting assembly, reducing the need for additional low-level lighting structures.

Challenge 3 | Ground-Level Maintenance of 20m-High Luminaires

At a mounting height of 20m, routine luminaire replacement and electrical maintenance on a fixed lighting assembly would typically require elevated access equipment or a crane.

In an oil depot, such work also involves additional site coordination and safety management.

Engineering Response

To simplify high-level luminaire maintenance:

A hydraulic lowering mechanism was incorporated to bring the complete lighting assembly down to ground level.

Luminaires and associated mounting components were arranged on the lowering assembly to facilitate inspection, repair, and replacement.

The hydraulic system allows the lighting assembly to be lowered and returned to its operating position.

The lowering mechanism, lighting assembly, and pole structure were supplied as a coordinated system.

Challenge 4 | Structural Stability and a 12-Day Delivery Schedule

The 20m high mast is a tall steel structure carrying multiple luminaires at its upper section. Its design needs to account for the pole's structural weight, lighting assembly loads, and local wind conditions.

At the same time, the project required three complete units within a 12-day delivery period. Pole fabrication, explosion-protected luminaire procurement, hydraulic mechanism integration, and pre-delivery inspection had to be coordinated within a tight schedule.

Engineering Response

To address structural requirements and the compressed delivery schedule:

Structural calculations were based on the 20m pole height, lighting assembly loads, and applicable local wind conditions.

Pole strength, top deflection, and base connection structure were checked.

Pole fabrication, luminaire preparation, and hydraulic mechanism pre-assembly were coordinated in parallel.

The lowering mechanism and lighting assembly were inspected and pre-tested before shipment to reduce on-site adjustment work.

Dedicated production scheduling enabled all three 20m hydraulic-lowering high mast lighting poles to be manufactured and delivered within 12 days.

3. Project Results

Three 20m hydraulic-lowering high mast lighting poles were manufactured and delivered for the Tangshan Yangguanlin Oil Depot tank farm.

The project delivered the following benefits:

Elevated Area Lighting: High mast installations provide concentrated lighting for priority inspection and operational areas around the storage tanks.

Hazardous-Area Equipment Selection: Explosion-protected luminaires were incorporated to meet the project's lighting equipment requirements.

Ground-Level Maintenance: The hydraulic lowering system brings the lighting assembly down for convenient luminaire inspection and replacement.

Short Delivery Lead Time: All three 20m high mast units were manufactured and delivered within 12 days.

The project demonstrates our ability to coordinate lighting equipment, hydraulic lowering mechanisms, and high mast structures for oil depot applications.
